My Grandfather is the Prime Minister of Angamally…

You need to be a Malayali to recognize this line :) :D :P

It’s part of a famous dialogue in a  film called Kilukkam, a Mohanlal-Revathy-Jagathy Sreekumar starrer.

It released sometime in the 1990s, went on to be a super hit and is still watched by many (that many includes me too …) every time it is telecast in one of the channels. Today it was on air and I’m sure, many Malayalis would have seen it again and laughed out loud at all that went on, on screen for it is difficult to keep mum or ignore the humour and the jokes, however stale it has become.

That’s the plus, it has not become stale.. the humour in the movie. The film was remade into Hindi I guess almost immediately. It still had Revathy in it.. and Jagathy’s role was given to Annu Kapoor. It did not do well, for it was not well made. There are many Malayalam films that have been remade into Hindi.. 99% of them have flopped.. I guess only Hera Pheri, Hulchul (with a music-dance melodramatic ending) and to some extent Bhool Bhulaiya which was a success…. the reasons could be many ;)

The story is set in Ooty. Joji (Mohanlal) is a tourist guide by profession. One day, at the railway station, he meets Nandini who has just arrived by the train. He takes her around Ooty and finds her an accommodation in a posh hotel. The story starts when he gets a call from his friend, the hotel manager, who tells him that his guest in her madness has caused havoc in the hotel lobby. The rest of the film is how, Joji and his friend Nischal (Jagathy Sreekumar) takes care of Nandini (she is a missing from a mental hospital, has a prize tag on her), her mad funny ways, the problems she causes, and when she reveals she is in Ooty to meet her father.

Revathy

Revathy for those who don’t know her, was part of a movie titled Raat in Hindi and many others (I remember only this one)… and the director of the movie, Mitr, My Friend … she is one spontaneous actor, and none could have done her role in this movie except her.

Mohanlal

Mohanlal is one of our superstars :) :)

Jagathy Sreekumar

Jagathy Sreekumar is an all-rounder… there is hardly a movie without him.. for those of whom who have caught Santhosh Sivan‘s latest Urumi, he does the role of the minister, that man who speaks those many tongues!

I am a great fan of Kilukkam, a great fan of many Priyadarshan movies of the 80s and 90s which still make me laugh and bring out tears from my eyes due to too much to laugh :P May be it’s because I’ve grown up with them…

  1. Classic movie. Iconic really, when you think of the many timelessly ticklish dialogues that it has gifted its viewers :) The maththangathalayaa is another fav. line :) :)

I love the scene where she eats those parotas and kozhri curry the best :D :D
      Unforgettable performances really :)

  2. UmaS says:

I love Revathy !!! So, do u think I can get a DVD with Eng subtitles….some movies remain in our memories for ever and we watch it all the times its being telecast…. :)

    • PNA says:

I think so Uma…. because I remember making AB watch this one sometime back …CD/DVD with English Subtitles :)

This is one where every dialogue is by heart and still there is a joy watching it again every time :D

  3. Bikram says:

Revathy .. I like she is a wonderful actor and also a very good person also , I remember i had met her at one of the occasions in Mumbai years and years ago, and i did not find any sort of big nose , i am a star heroine or anything like that ..

Seems to be a good movie .. i would not understand it though

    • PNA says:

She is one down-to-earth actor. Once when she had come to the Uni for a talk, nobody recognized her as the actor for she was dressed in the most deglamourized way possible, but her when she opened her mouth to talk, the students critical of her attire were silenced…

Biks, you can pick up a cd with the english subtitles.. I wouldn’t recommend the Hindi one… it takes away the act away from the Malayalam actors and film :)
