50 rose buds and a yummy chocolate cake, knocked at our door around midnight or a little before …
Yes, 50 rose buds, for somebody’s birthday
And this somebody’s better half drools over flowers and cake always until she realizes, oh! oh! it is for him from the hotel… poor folks, they were not aware, a spicy chilly cake, or some chilly icecream or an entertaining read or a travel package to a trek around the hotel … would have made him happier
She is happy, as least this birthday had its ornaments …and relieved that she did not have to run wild in search for these standard birthday trinkets in an unknown city in the middle of the night; the thought of carrying them all the way from Bombay did cross her mind a couple of times, ah! but hard labour!! what if the cake got squashed while putting it through the scanners or the airport folks threw it into the luggage carrier, a pulp of a cake that would make and a pudding it would have become! … something different this time…. and so it did…
We did celebrate his birthday… And the celebrations took us to Jaipur (her time to be surprised) over the weekend.. an ‘architectured’ city, … the foresight of the rulers comes through, from the choice of the locations for their palaces and forts, the designs and the colours… the pink city therefore, it gets it name!
The high point, we had a view of the Jal Mahal through out as our room faced the lake… Jal Mahal is an example of what power and money can do,
“a beautiful lake, surrounded by hills… why not build a Mahal here, Minister,” I can hear the king saying and the minister nodding and immediately, the architect was called, a plan drawn out and labour imported and work assigned…
it may have taken years… but a worth of a wait…
Signpost: If you are going to Jaipur, go to the road leading to the Nahargarh fort… mid way, there is a temple, with a windmill. Stop there, cross over and go over to the little structure of a doorway at the edge, a point to view the city… evening mind you, to see that splendid blue of the waters and the yellow of the Jal Mahal, a feast to the photographic and the naked eyes
After the 50 roses, this view will be etched in memory forever.. whenever AB’s birthday comes next or otherwise…

PS: WP playing tricks! getting lost in the maze of all the new additions… lost a post, but re-wrote a better one…
PS 2: What did I give him: A book… Panchatantra is the name :P to re-live childhood… to bring in some nostalgia in between his hectic calls and clients
